Russia to Launch Cyber Attacks on UK, Says Minister
A senior minister will warn that Russia is planning cyber attacks on the United Kingdom and its allies. The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, will make this warning at a meeting of Nato.
McFadden says Russia could target British businesses and leave millions without power. He also believes that Russia’s Unit 29155 has already carried out attacks in the UK and Europe.
The minister will describe cyber war as “hidden” and “exceptionally aggressive”. He believes it can be destabilizing and debilitating. McFadden will focus on Russia’s ability to shut down power grids and target British businesses.
He will tell Nato allies that they should not underestimate the Russian cyber threat. The threat is real, according to McFadden.
This warning comes after a series of recent cyber attacks in the UK. Several councils have been targeted, including Middleborough, Salford, Portsmouth, and Tees. These attacks are believed to be carried out by groups affiliated with the Kremlin.
McFadden will also mention that these groups often act with impunity as long as they do not target interests close to President Putin’s.
