Most victims are men, with 262 reported cases, many of whom were tortured while held captive on occupied territories or in Russia. Women and children have also been affected, with 104 women and 12 children – 10 girls and two boys – being victimized.
The UN mission has condemned the use of sexual violence as a weapon against civilians and prisoners of war. In April, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsya told the Security Council that Russia uses this tactic to harm its enemies.
