**UK Sanctions 30 Russian Oil Tankers**
The UK government has targeted 30 oil tankers that are part of Russia‘s “shadow fleet“. This fleet carries billions of dollars worth of oil and oil products. The government says these revenues help fund Russia’s war in Ukraine.
These new sanctions bring the total number of U.K.-sanctioned Russian vessels to 73. Other countries, like the EU and US, have also targeted Russia’s shadow fleet before.
**Why Are These Sanctions Important?**
The UK government believes that constraining oil revenues is crucial for maintaining security. This includes stopping Russian ships from using Western insurance services.
Russia has spent $10 billion to expand its shadow fleet since 2022. The fleet consists of old and poorly insured tankers that carried two-thirds of Russia’s seaborne crude oil exports last year.
