G7 to Pressure China Over Ukraine Support
The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries are expected to agree on increasing pressure on China. This is because China supports Russia‘s actions in Ukraine.
A draft statement seen by Bloomberg shows that G7 countries want to take action against China and other countries that help Russia. The statement says they will use “appropriate measures” against these countries.
This change in tone is significant. Earlier, the G7 just asked China to stop helping Russia with dual-use goods. Now, they are taking a stronger stance.
The pressure on China comes as Western countries accuse them of militarily supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They say China is producing lethal aid for Russia.
The EU‘s top diplomat has spoken about “convincing” evidence that China is making deadly supplies for Russia. The G7 wants to stop Russia from getting money from energy and other resources.
Earlier, the UK sanctioned 30 oil tankers owned by Russia’s “shadow fleet”. This fleet helps Russia avoid sanctions on oil prices.
China says it is neutral in the conflict but has deepened ties with Russia and helped them against Western sanctions.
The G7 wants to show that China is helping Russia’s actions. NATO’s former head said that Beijing is a key supporter of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
