**Ukraine Strikes Russian Airfield with US Missiles**
On November 25, Ukraine used American ATACMS ballistic missiles to strike a Russian military airfield in Kursk Oblast. This is the first time Ukraine has used these long-range missiles on Russian territory.
The attack was carried out using cluster warheads, which release multiple smaller bombs after impact. The Ukrainian project “Cyberflour” shared footage of the missile strike and identified two impact areas near aircraft equipment parking areas.
Russian military bloggers have confirmed the attack, with one blogger reporting that eight missiles were launched and only seven were intercepted by air defense systems.
**Background on ATACMS Missiles**
The use of ATACMS missiles comes after months of Ukrainian appeals to Western nations for permission to use long-range weapons. The US had restricted the use of these missiles, fearing escalation. However, with President Joe Biden‘s approval, Ukraine was given permission to strike deep into Russian territory.
**Previous Use of American Missiles**
This is not the first time Ukraine has used American ballistic missiles on Russian territory. Earlier this year, Ukrainian forces struck a Russian arsenal in Bryansk Oblast using ATACMS missiles.
**Ukraine’s Military Needs**
The Ukrainian military chief, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, has stated that Ukraine needs high-technology weaponry to overcome Russia‘s advantage in the skies, on the ground, and in electronic warfare. The use of ATACMS missiles is one way Ukraine is seeking to address this imbalance.
