Norway’s Government Boosts Aid to Ukraine
The government of Norway plans to increase its financial support for Ukraine in 2025. The current aid is around 27 billion Norwegian kroner ($2.4 billion), but it will be boosted to 30 billion kroner ($2.7 billion).
This decision comes after initial budget plans suggested reducing the support to 15 billion kroner ($1.3 billion). However, opposition parties pushed for a higher contribution, with some suggesting 45 billion kroner ($4 billion) in aid.
The increase in funding will be used to support both military and civilian efforts in Ukraine. The government aims to nearly double its original budget proposal after negotiations with opposition leaders.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said that the situation in Ukraine is getting more serious, and Norway wants to be a clear supporter of Ukraine’s struggle. The proposed aid package will be further discussed in party groups before a final agreement on November 28.
Norway’s support for Ukraine is part of its Nansen program, which was initially approved last year with a budget of 75 billion kroner ($6.7 billion). The government has since proposed expanding the program to 135 billion kroner ($12 billion) and extending it until 2030.
Støre will travel to Stockholm to meet with other prime ministers from Nordic and Baltic countries, where Ukrainian support will be a key discussion point. The meeting is expected to take place soon.
