**Russian Authorities Capture UK Volunteer in Ukraine**
On November 26, Russian authorities confirmed the capture and detention of James Scott Rhys Anderson, a British national fighting for Ukraine. The incident took place in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
Anderson was accused by the Russian Investigative Committee of “terrorism” and “mercenary activities”. This is a common practice by Russian authorities when foreign volunteers are captured while fighting for Ukraine.
A video showing the captured volunteer was posted on Telegram channels on November 24. In the video, Anderson identifies himself as a 22-year-old former British army signalman who joined the International Legion to fight in Ukraine.
**Fears of Torture**
Anderson’s father, Scott, spoke with the Daily Mail about his son’s capture. He said he was shocked and heartbroken when he saw the video. “He looks frightened, scared, and worried,” Anderson said. He is concerned that his son may be tortured in prison.
This is not the first time British citizens have been captured by Russian forces. In 2022, two Britons, Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, were sentenced to death but later released in a prisoner exchange.
**Russia’s Advances**
Russia has increased pressure on Ukrainian troops in Kursk Oblast since early August. Ukraine has lost over 40% of territory previously captured during the incursion, according to Reuters.
