Speaker Shalva Papuashvili Wants Presidential Elections in Georgia to be Held Before the End of 2024.
The Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, wants presidential elections in Georgia to take place before the end of this year. This is because if they are not held until next year, the new President’s term would actually last six years instead of five.
According to the Constitution, the President of Georgia should be elected for a 5-year term. The last elections were held in 2018, and due to special rules, the current President was elected for a 6-year term. This means their term will end on December 16 this year. If presidential elections are not held until next year, the new President’s term would be 6 years as well.
The Constitution also says that if parliamentary elections coincide with presidential elections, the latter must be held within 45 days at most. So, Papuashvili wants the presidential election to take place on December 14, 2024, and for the inauguration of the new President to happen on the third Sunday after that – which would be December 29, 2024.
