New President to be Elected in Georgia on December 14
Georgia’s sixth President will be elected soon. The Parliament has decided that the election will take place on December 14, and the new President will be inaugurated on December 29. This is after a meeting of the Georgian Dream party, which took place despite protests outside the Parliament building.
The country’s current President, Salome Zurabishvili, is leaving office on December 16. She was elected by popular vote in 2018. Now, a new President will be chosen by an electoral college made up of 300 members. This includes members of Parliament, local authorities, and leaders from the regions of Adjara and Abkhazia.
Some people are worried that the election may not be fair. There have been complaints about election fraud, and the legitimacy of the Parliament is being challenged. This raises questions about whether the new President will be legitimate.
The candidate who wins must get at least two-thirds of the votes to be elected in the first round. If this doesn’t happen, a second round will be held between the top two candidates. The Speaker of the Parliament said that if there’s a second round, it will take place on the same day as the election.
Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, has been trying to control the country’s institutions for years. They’ve had trouble with Presidents in the past, who didn’t always do what they wanted. The party leader, Mamuka Mdinaradze, said that this time, they’ll choose a candidate who will definitely follow their agenda.
