Russia Moves to Remove Taliban from Terror List
A group of Russian lawmakers has submitted a bill that could remove the Taliban from Russia’s list of terrorist organizations. This move is part of efforts to normalize relations between Russia and the Taliban.
The bill, if approved, would allow the Taliban to be removed as a banned terror group if it stops promoting terrorism. The legislation was proposed by 12 senators and Duma members from two main parties: United Russia and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR).
The Taliban is considered a terrorist organization by many countries, including the US, Canada, and the UAE. Its rule has been marked by human rights abuses and restrictions on women’s and minority rights.
Russia has maintained contact with the Taliban but hasn’t officially recognized them as rulers of Afghanistan. The country‘s Security Council Secretary, Sergei Shoigu, recently visited Afghanistan and said that removing the Taliban from Russia’s terror list is nearing completion.
Shoigu stated that his visit aimed to establish a constructive dialogue between Russia and Afghanistan, promote trade, and encourage foreign investment in the country.
