**EU Proposed Sanctions on Chinese Firms**
The European Union has proposed a new set of sanctions targeting over 50 individuals and 30 entities. The main goal is to stop Chinese companies from helping Russia develop military technology in Ukraine.
**What are the sanctions about?**
These sanctions aim to freeze assets and prevent travel for more than 50 people and nearly 30 groups, including Chinese firms that allegedly help Russian companies make attack drones. This would be the EU’s 15th set of sanctions since Russia invaded Ukraine.
**Why is China involved?**
China has said it’s not taking sides in the conflict and doesn’t supply weapons to either side. But the EU says some Chinese companies are helping Russia develop military technology, including engines for attack drones.
**What else is included in the proposal?**
The proposed sanctions also include:
* Targeting Chinese firms that work on drone technology
* Sanctioning a Hong Kong-based company that broke EU trade rules
* Adding North Korean officials who helped Russia with troops and supplies
* Banning over 45 Russian oil tankers from using European ports to reduce Moscow‘s oil revenue
**What’s next?**
These sanctions need approval from all 27 EU member states. The proposal also comes as foreign ministers from the Group of Seven are set to agree on “appropriate measures” against countries that support Russia’s war effort.
