**Ukraine Withdraws Defective Mortar Shells from Front Lines**
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has ordered the removal of defective mortar shells from the front lines. Soldiers reported widespread malfunctions, leading to a thorough investigation.
According to the investigation, at least 100,000 shells have been recalled. This is enough to cover six months of conservative usage. The recall is crucial for ensuring the safety of Ukrainian soldiers.
**Background**
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has increased its domestic production of military equipment, including shells and drones. The aim was to produce up to 1 million artillery shells annually by 2025.
However, military units reported multiple critical failures between September 18 and November 10. These included shells deviating from targets, failing to exit the mortar tube, and not exploding on impact.
**Investigation**
Quality control inspectors initially identified risks in the production process. However, they later approved the production capacity of 670,000 mines annually. A recent emergency meeting revealed systemic failures in quality control, including the absence of quality control systems before delivery to the Armed Forces.
The investigation also found that non-standard detonators were being used, and there was no methodology for testing imported gunpowder.
**Consequences**
Ukraine’s Parliament has registered a resolution to dismiss Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. The State Bureau of Investigation has opened a criminal investigation into the scandal.
