White House Urges Ukraine to Lower Draft Age
The White House is telling Ukraine to change its law about military recruitment. They want the draft age lowered from 25 to 18, according to a source who spoke to the Associated Press.
Ukraine’s military leaders say they need more soldiers because of ongoing losses and long battles since February 2022. To fix this problem, Ukraine needs 500,000 more troops, said Roman Kostenko, a senior official.
The White House thinks that lowering the draft age would help get more young men to join the army. European officials have also raised concerns about Ukraine’s lack of manpower, not equipment.
This is what US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan recently said: Ukraine has gotten many weapons from America, but still faces big challenges on the battlefield, mainly because they don’t have enough soldiers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has refused to lower the draft age in the past. He instead offered contract opportunities with incentives for those who are not currently required to join.
