Changes in the Georgian Language and Literature Exam Program
Aleksandre Tsuladze, a candidate for the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, spoke about removing some works from the exam program of Georgian language and literature. He said that only works that are mandatory to study will be included in exams.
Tsuladze explained that the decision was made because not all works can be taught in schools. He said that the learning process is divided into compulsory and non-compulsory parts, just like in other countries. The goal is to focus on the most important works that students must learn.
The candidate for minister also talked about making some removed works mandatory again in the future. According to him, a group of independent experts will decide this issue. If these works are added back, they will be part of the compulsory study program and students will have to learn them.
Tsuladze denied rumors that the works were removed from the curriculum altogether. He said that students who are taking exams this year have already learned all the required material. The changes made in the exam program do not affect what is taught in schools.
The candidate for minister emphasized that no one can make all works mandatory to be taught in schools. He cited the example of national goals and values, which were strengthened recently. New subject standards will be approved in 2025, and Tsuladze’s team wants to add some removed works to the compulsory study program as part of these new standards.
