**Ukraine’s Military Losses Soar to Over 0.5% of Male Population**
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. A new report by The Economist says that between 60,000 and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers may have died during this time.
In February 2022, President Zelenskyy spoke about the losses, saying that 31,000 soldiers had been killed. In October 2024, a US estimate put the number at over 57,500 deaths, with another 250,000 wounded.
**High Number of Casualties**
The Economist report says that more than 0.5% of Ukraine’s pre-war male population aged 18-49 has been killed. This is a high number, even compared to other major wars like the Vietnam and Korean conflicts combined.
The report also estimates that up to 400,000 Ukrainian soldiers may be too badly hurt to keep fighting. It adds that civilian deaths are not well documented, which suggests there could be even more human losses.
**Morale on Both Sides Plummets**
After nearly three years of fighting, morale is reportedly low on both sides. The report says that this is due to the high number of casualties and the intensity of the fighting.
**Russian Losses Also High**
The Economist report also notes that Russian military losses are significant. In November 2024, Politico reported that around 70,000 Russian soldiers may have been killed in just two months (May and June). Another report by The Economist in July said that between 462,000 and 728,000 Russian soldiers had been killed, injured or captured by mid-June.
**Ukraine’s General Staff Reports High Russian Losses**
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, more than 735,000 Russian personnel have died as of November 27, 2024.
