Georgian Prime Minister Candidate Talks Peace with Russia
The Georgian government wants to end its conflict with Russia peacefully. This is what Irakli Kobakhidze, a candidate for Prime Minister, said in a speech to the parliament.
He stressed that Georgia will not give up on getting back control of its territories. These areas have been occupied by Russia since 2008. Mr. Kobakhidze said this is one of Georgia’s “red lines”. This means it will do everything to get these areas back, no matter what happens.
For the past nine years, Georgia has not recognized Russia’s control over some parts of its land. Mr. Kobakhidze said this policy has been successful so far and will continue in the future.
He also talked about how Georgia wants to be friends with Russia, but only on certain conditions. He called this a “pragmatic” approach. This means that Georgia is willing to work with Russia, but it will not compromise its own interests.
Mr. Kobakhidze said his government’s top priorities are making sure everyone in the country has enough money and getting back control of the occupied territories. He hopes these goals can be achieved together with global trends and regional developments.
