President Zurabishvili Makes Statement on EU Accession Process
On November 28, President Salome Zurabishvili made a statement. She met with the Diplomatic Corps and opposition members before speaking.
Zurabishvili said that the Georgian Dream’s decision to stop the EU accession process was a “constitutional coup”. This happened after the October 26 parliamentary elections were rigged. She called on the EU to hold new elections in Georgia.
President Zurabishvili also told the opposition to work together. She urged them to put aside their differences and stand united. She said that as long as they are united, she will support them. The President called for “reasonable decisions” made together.
Zurabishvili also spoke directly to civil servants, police officers, and soldiers. She told them that it’s time to make a decision about the future of Georgia. She reminded them that they serve the state, not Russia or any other foreign power.
The President warned Georgian ambassadors abroad that if they don’t stand up for their country now, Russia will take control tomorrow. She told police officers that their duty is to protect citizens, not foreigners or traitors.
To soldiers, she said that they are the most loyal and hurt by Georgia’s return to Russia. But she pledged that nobody can take away Georgia’s independence.
The article does not mention if the opposition and civil servants will respond to President Zurabishvili’s call.
