**Opposition Politician Says Government’s EU Stance is Treason**
Roman Gotsiridze, an opposition politician in Georgia, has called the government’s stance on joining the European Union “treason”. The Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, said recently that negotiations with the EU would not be considered until 2028.
Gotsiridze said this decision is a breach of the country‘s constitution. He believes the government should be working towards joining the EU and NATO, as stated in the constitution. Instead, he says, they are taking steps to stay out of the EU.

Gotsiridze also warned that without Western aid, Georgia faces a “catastrophic” situation. He said the country’s economy relies heavily on international assistance and investment from Western countries. If this help were to stop, he said it would be difficult for the government to maintain the exchange rate or the value of the GEL (Georgia’s currency).

The Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, made his statement after a meeting with the parliamentary majority and the government team. He also said that Georgia will not accept any budget grant from the EU until 2028.
