The European Parliament has approved an amendment to text of the resolution that calls on the President to Georgia to pardon Mikheil Sakashvili using her constitutional right.  

European Parliament Approves Amendment to Georgia Resolution

The European Parliament has approved a change to its resolution on Georgia. The updated text calls on the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, to use her constitutional power and pardon former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

According to the resolution, Saakashvili‘s release is needed due to humanitarian reasons. The European Parliament also holds the Georgian government responsible for Saakashvili’s life, health, and safety.

Another part of the resolution asks the European Commission to review Georgia’s visa-free travel arrangement with the EU. It also calls for the impeachment of five high-ranking officials: Bidzina Ivanishvili, Irakli Kobakhidze, Kakha Kaladze, Shalva Papuashvili, and Irakli Gharibashvili.

The resolution was adopted by a large majority of 444 votes against 72.
