European Parliament Takes a Stand on Georgia’s Elections
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution about the elections in Georgia. The main points of this resolution are that the elections should not be recognized, and new elections should be held within a year.
This resolution also calls for the release of former President Mikheil Saakashvili from prison. He is being kept there by the Georgian authorities. It suggests that President Salome Zurabishvili should pardon him using her presidential powers.
Tina Bokuchava, who is in charge of the “Unity National Movement”, says now is the time for unity among people who care about Georgia’s future with Europe. According to her, this is especially important as the country’s leader, Bidzina Ivanishvili, is losing it not only its European future but also its statehood.
The resolution was approved by 444 MEPs (Members of the European Parliament), while 72 voted against it and 82 abstained. It asks the European Commission to review Georgia’s visa-free status. The document also demands the ratification of several high-ranking officials in Georgia, including Bidzina Ivanishvili.
