**Russia Uses Experimental Missile in Ukraine Strike**
The British Defense Ministry says Russia likely used an expensive and experimental missile, the Oreshnik, as a form of retaliation against Ukraine. This was done to show that Russia can hit back if Ukraine uses Western missiles.
According to the UK’s intelligence update on November 29, the Russian strike on Dnipro on November 21 was a significant escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It was also the first time a nuclear-capable missile called an IRBM (Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile) had been used in combat by Russia.
**The Oreshnik Missile**
The British intelligence says that Russia likely only has a few Oreshnik missiles, which are not yet being produced on a large scale. These missiles are much more expensive than others used by Russia against Ukraine. The UK’s Ministry of Defense wrote: “Russia highly likely only has a handful of Oreshnik missiles, which are yet to enter serial production.”
**A Message from Russia**
The use of the Oreshnik missile was almost certainly meant as a message from Russia that it can retaliate if Ukraine uses Western missiles. This comes after Ukraine used Western missiles into Russia.
In its update, the British Defense Ministry said: “Russia’s use of an experimental system against Ukraine was almost certainly intended as strategic messaging following Ukraine’s use of Western missiles into Russia.”
