Georgian Patriarchate Calls for Peaceful Resolution of Conflict
The Georgian Patriarchate has issued a statement expressing concern and heartache over the recent events on Rustaveli Street. The statement calls on both authorities and society to respect each other’s differing political views and refrain from violence, in keeping with Christian values.
According to the Patriarchate, the peaceful protest escalated into physical confrontation between law enforcement agencies and protesters. The statement notes that both sides were responsible for aggressive actions, with protesters attacking police, trying to break into buildings, and damaging infrastructure. In response, law enforcement officials physically assaulted demonstrators, including journalists.
The Patriarchate is worried about the lack of respect and understanding among people and political parties in Georgia. They lament the “categorical non-acceptance” of each other’s views and positions, which has become commonplace. The Church always calls for restraint and mutual respect, and continues to urge people to refrain from aggression and abusive behavior.
The Patriarchate is asking both authorities and protesters to calm down and resolve their differences peacefully. They urge people not to hurt each other because of different opinions and views, and to express their positions in a more civilized manner.
