Public Defender Levan Ioseliani is worried about the increasing violence at rallies in Georgia. He thinks that if the investigation into these cases doesn’t happen quickly, things will get worse.
Ioseliani said that people are now more likely to be hurt at rallies because of the delay in investigating past cases. “If this process isn’t stopped somewhere,” he warned, “we’ll see even more violence at future rallies and someone may die.” He thinks it’s everyone’s responsibility, but especially those in charge of police actions.
The Ombudsman’s Office is working to make sure that people are treated correctly while they’re detained. Their representatives visit all detention centers in Georgia and write down what happens. They also publish information about the detentions, like what injuries people have.
Ioseliani talked to a lawyer named Beka Basilaia who was detained last night. The lawyer said he was hurt and plans to talk about it in court. The Ombudsman’s Office helped get medical care for people who were hurt while they were being kept away from others.
