**CERN Ends Cooperation with Russian Institutes**
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has ended its cooperation with research institutes in Russia. This decision was made on November 30, following a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In 2022, the CERN Council decided to terminate International Cooperation Agreements (ICAs) with Russia and Belarus after their expiration in 2024. The Council reaffirmed this decision in fall 2023.
**350 Russian Scientists Expelled**
This move means that around 350 Russian scientists will be expelled from CERN, which is based near Geneva on Swiss and French territory. However, cooperation with Russian scientists associated with CERN under different agreements will continue.
**Cooperation with Belarus Ended Earlier**
CERN’s cooperation with researchers from Belarusian institutes ended earlier this year when their ICA expired in June.
**Background on CERN and Russia**
Russia has never been a member state of CERN. Instead, it held observer status, meaning it did not contribute to the agency’s budget or have decision-making rights. ICAs typically run for five years, with the expectation that they will be renewed unless either party gives notice at least six months before expiration.
**CERN’s Role**
CERN is the world’s largest particle physics research center and operates the Large Hadron Collider. The organization aims to advance scientific knowledge through international cooperation.
