Syrian Rebels Take Over Aleppo City
Syrian rebels launched a major attack on the city of Aleppo on November 30. The Syrian army said it had to redeploy its forces due to the attack.
Russia has promised to send more military help to the Syrian government. This help is expected to arrive within 72 hours, according to two sources in the Syrian military.
The attack by rebels marks a new stage in the long-standing conflict between anti-government rebels and the Syrian army. The front lines have been mostly frozen since 2020.
Rebels launched their attack from areas of northwestern Syria that are outside of government control. In response, Russian warplanes carried out airstrikes on November 29 against Aleppo and neighboring Idlib province.
The airstrikes reportedly killed four civilians and injured 25 others, including eight children. The Syrian Civil Defense, a rescue service working in opposition–held areas, reported this information.
On November 30, the Syrian government and Russian warplanes again targeted residential neighborhoods of Aleppo with strikes. The Syrian Civil Defense said this on the social media platform X.
The Syrian military claimed that the strikes prevented rebels from establishing fixed positions in Aleppo. However, the state army was still forced to withdraw.
The army is now carrying out a “redeployment operation” aimed at strengthening its defense lines and preparing for a counterattack.
Russia’s involvement in Syria has been criticized by the UN and other organizations. They have accused Russian forces of committing war crimes in the country, including intentionally bombing hospitals and using tactics like “double-tap” attacks.
