**CERN Ends Partnership with Russian Institutions**
The European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, has officially ended its partnership with Russian scientific institutions. This decision was made on November 30, 2024, and confirmed by the organization’s 24 member states.
**Impact on Russian Scientists**
This move affects collaborations between CERN and Russian institutes. However, it does not mean that all Russian-affiliated scientists will be cut off from CERN. Fewer than 350 Russian-affiliated scientists currently work with CERN, mostly based outside of Geneva. Those affiliated through separate agreements will remain involved in projects.
**Background on CERN**
CERN is renowned for its Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest experimental research facility. It brings together over 10,000 scientists from more than 100 countries to study the structure of matter using advanced particle accelerators. CERN has an annual budget of $1.5 billion and hosts 17,000 guest researchers from around the world.
**Russia‘s Relationship with CERN**
Russia had observer status at CERN but was never a member state. This allowed Russia to participate in research without contributing to CERN’s budget or decision-making processes. However, this status was suspended in March 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. CERN announced it would not renew its agreement with Russia in December 2023, and cooperation with Belarus ended in June 2024.
