EU Unhappy with Georgia’s Decision to Delay Joining Talks
The European Union is not pleased with a statement from Georgian leader Irakli Kobakhidze. He said that the country would not start talks on joining the EU and would not accept financial help until 2028.
This decision goes against what most Georgians want, which is to join the EU. The Constitution of Georgia says this is the people’s wish. The EU was unhappy with how the Georgian government handled things in June. They suspended talks and stopped giving money directly to the government.
People in Georgia took to the streets again to show they still want to join the EU. But some protesters were hurt, which the EU strongly condemns. They say the Georgian government should respect people’s right to free speech and peaceful assembly.
The EU is concerned about how democratic things are going in Georgia. They think the country has gone downhill since elections this year. They hope that a report from OSCE/ODIHR will show what went wrong and recommend changes.
The EU still wants Georgia to join them, but it’s up to the Georgian government to make that happen.
