Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Georgia are speaking out about pressure on civil servants who opposed the country’s decision to suspend its European Union membership process.
The NGOs say that some civil servants have been targeted after publicly condemning the change of course and the EU suspension. They are calling on relevant agencies to act within the constitutional framework and protect these workers’ rights.
According to reports, hundreds of employees from various ministries and budget agencies issued a statement in support of European integration. However, after this, pressure was put on those who spoke out against the decision.
The NGOs say that this is not allowed under the constitution. They point out that Article 78 of the Constitution requires constitutional bodies to ensure Georgia’s full integration into the EU and NATO. Civil servants are also required to take steps to promote European integration.
The NGOs claim that the reorganization announced in Tbilisi City Hall may be used as a tool against those who express their views on the country’s future and disagree with decisions made by “Georgian Dream” against the constitutional order.
They call for structural changes in the City Hall to be carried out transparently, within the law, and with full respect for labor rights. The NGOs also offer free legal assistance to civil servants who have been fired illegally or on alleged political grounds.
Organizations such as the “International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy”, “Association of Young Lawyers of Georgia”, and “Transparency International Georgia” are behind this statement.
