US Concerned Over Georgia’s Move Away from EU Path
The US government has expressed concern over the Georgian government’s decision to move away from a path of greater integration with Europe. This was stated by US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller on December 2.
Miller said that the US is concerned about the steps taken by the Georgian government to move away from this path, which the people of Georgia support. He also expressed support for the Georgian people and did not rule out further sanctions against government officials.
Further Sanctions Possible
The spokesperson mentioned that while he couldn’t confirm any new sanctions, they hadn’t been ruled out either. Miller said that when the US does impose sanctions, it makes them known publicly. He also reminded that previous sanctions had already been imposed on Georgian government officials and visa restrictions were put in place.
Previous Statements by Matthew Miller
This is not the first time Matthew Miller has spoken about Georgia’s situation. In November, he stated that the US would not hesitate to use additional measures if necessary. He also called for a full investigation into the Georgian elections and expressed deep concern over the anti-democratic actions of the Georgian government.
