**UN Official Calls for Respect of Freedoms in Georgia**
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged the Georgian authorities to protect the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. This comes after a series of protests since November 28 have been marred by violence and police dispersals using disproportionate force.
**Violence Against Protesters and Journalists**
Footage shows security forces using excessive force against protesters and journalists, including pepper spray, water cannons, and chemical irritants. There are reports of degrading and inhumane treatment of detainees, with dozens of journalists being chased and beaten by unidentified individuals.
**UN Official’s Statement**
Türk called on the Georgian authorities to respect and protect the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. He also urged protesters to exercise their rights peacefully and for those found responsible for violations to be held accountable. The High Commissioner stressed that all Georgians should be able to express their views freely and peacefully.
**Detentions and Allegations of Ill-Treatment**
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 224 people have been detained since November 28. Most face charges of petty hooliganism and disobeying police orders. Türk expressed concern about reports that a number of children are among those detained and called for their rights to be fully respected.
**Demand for Release of Detainees**
The UN Human Rights Chief demanded the release of all detainees who were exercising their rights to freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. He also urged the authorities to guarantee due process, presumption of innocence, legal counsel, and adequate medical care for those facing other charges.
