President of Georgia Speaks Out Against Crackdown on Protesters
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has spoken out against the police crackdown on a peaceful protest that took place tonight. In a social media post, she described what happened as a “worrying escalation”.
According to the President, the peaceful demonstration had just begun when the police started cracking down on the protesters. This is unacceptable, Zurabishvili said, as it amounts to an attack on freedom of expression and the right to protest.
The President also expressed concern about how people were being arrested and treated after their arrest. Fundamental rights are being violated, she stated.
