Russia Accused of Stealing Ukrainian Children
A group from Ukraine’s government and Yale investigators will go before the United Nations Security Council on December 4. They plan to show new evidence that Russia has taken Ukrainian children and made them take Russian identities.
Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab says they used open-source information and satellite pictures to find out how Russian planes might have moved orphans from occupied areas in eastern Ukraine. The researchers think President Vladimir Putin ordered this program, with his senior officials overseeing it.
The report follows 314 Ukrainian children. At least 67 of them have been made into Russian citizens, making it harder for them to be found. But the true number of kids involved is believed to be much higher.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this new research shows Russia’s efforts to erase Ukraine’s identity and its people. He emphasized that only by working together can we restore justice, protect Ukrainian children, and bring them home.
The head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, Andrii Yermak, said the Yale report is the most comprehensive look at Russia’s forced adoption program. Top Russian officials, including President Putin and Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, oversee this program, which aims to erase Ukrainian identity through illegal changes in citizenship and “re-education.”
The International Criminal Court already had arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova for the illegal deportation of children. Ukraine is asking the international community to demand that Russia tell them about the deported kids, let people see where they are being held, and support efforts to return them home.
