US Condemns Police Violence in Georgia
The US is unhappy with how police treated protesters in Georgia. The State Department said the police used too much force and hurt some journalists.
A spokesperson for the State Department, Vedant Patel, made a statement on December 3. He said that the US is concerned about reports of violence against protesters and journalists. Patel also called on all sides to keep the protests peaceful.
Protests in Georgia started when the Prime Minister said the country would not join the EU until 2028. Protesters were met with riot police, special forces, and masked men who used force against them. There are videos and reports of people being hurt, and journalists being targeted.
The US is also concerned about attacks on journalists. Some protesters had their cameras broken, while others were physically hurt or arrested.
The US wants the Georgian government to respect human rights and keep the rule of law. The country’s Prime Minister said earlier that EU accession negotiations would be put on hold until 2028.
