**German MEP Calls for Sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili**
Michael Galer, a German Member of the European Parliament (MEP), has urged for sanctions to be imposed on Bidzina Ivanishvili. In a social media post, Galer stated that it’s time to hold those responsible for repression against political opponents and civil society in Georgia accountable.
Galer specifically pointed to Ivanishvili as the “godfather” of this “reorientation”. He also suggested that the European Union should take a close look at Ukraine’s list of sanctioned individuals. Ukraine had imposed sanctions on 19 Georgian citizens, including Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
**Who is on Ukraine’s Sanctions List?**
The list includes several high-ranking officials, such as:
* Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze
* Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze
* Head of State Security Service Grigol Liluashvili
* Executive Secretary of “Georgian Dream” Mamuka Mdinaradze
* Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri
These individuals have been accused of human rights abuses and repression against political opponents. The sanctions are a move to hold them accountable for their actions.
**What’s Next?**
The European Union has yet to comment on Galer’s call for sanctions. However, the issue is expected to be raised in upcoming meetings between EU officials and Georgian leaders. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between Georgia and its Western partners over human rights issues.
