**Council of Europe Concerned About Situation in Georgia**
The Council of Europe’s Bureau has expressed concern about the situation in Georgia. On December 5, they adopted a Declaration after meeting in Strasbourg.
**Violent Protests Condemned**
The Declaration condemns the violent handling of peaceful protests against the government’s decision to suspend EU accession talks. It also calls for effective protection of human rights and freedom of assembly.
**Calls for Restraint and Dialogue**
The Bureau asks all parties to be calm and seek a solution through constructive dialogue. They condemn violence against locally elected representatives in Georgia.
**Democratic Values Must Be Respected**
As a member of the Council of Europe, Georgia is obliged to respect democratic values, the rule of law, and human rights. This is a binding obligation for Georgia to remain a member of the Council of Europe.
**Concerns About Georgian Authorities**
The Declaration notes that the government’s decision adds to concerns about the Georgian authorities’ commitment to European democratic principles. It emphasizes the importance of reforms aligned with Council of Europe standards, particularly in strengthening local self-government.
