German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is hopeful of reaching an agreement with US President-elect Donald Trump on a joint strategy for Ukraine.
Scholz spoke to the Funke group of newspapers on December 6. He said that he is confident that they can develop a plan together for Ukraine. The German Chancellor also stated that nothing should be decided without consulting the Ukrainian people.
The conversation between Scholz and Trump took place by phone, and it was mentioned that Scholz’s team has been in contact with Trump’s security advisers.
Ukraine has become an important topic during Germany’s snap election campaign. The country is scheduled to hold elections in February after Scholz’s governing coalition collapsed last month.
On December 2, Scholz visited Kyiv and promised to provide Ukraine with 650 million euros ($680 million) worth of arms. However, it was clarified that this would be part of a larger package of 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) already announced in October.
Scholz has been vocal about his support for Ukraine during the war against Russia. He visited Kyiv and promised to supply arms to the country.
