**US Not Getting Involved in Syria Conflict**
The US will not get involved in the conflict between President Bashar al–Assad‘s regime and rebel forces in Syria. This was stated by US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on December 7.
Sullivan said that Assad’s allies, including Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, have been weakened and distracted. He also mentioned that Russia is busy with a war of attrition in Ukraine and cannot provide large-scale military support to Assad.
**Rebel Advance**
A coalition of anti–government forces across Syria captured multiple cities on December 7 and continued to push towards Damascus. Sullivan said that the US will not get involved militarily in the Syrian civil war.
If Assad’s regime collapses, which is expected soon, the US will take steps to prevent the resurgence of ISIS in the region, according to Sullivan.
**Russia’s Foothold at Stake**
There is much at stake for Russia if Assad’s regime falls. Russia will lose its regional foothold in the Middle East and face a significant blow to its influence in the region.
**Ukraine Connection**
The situation in Syria has been linked to the war in Ukraine by US President-elect Donald Trump. Trump said that Russia is “so tied up” in Ukraine and has sustained heavy losses, which prevents it from lending greater military aid to Assad.
**US Officials Expecting Regime Collapse**
Five US officials told CNN on December 7 that Assad’s regime could collapse within days as Syrian rebels continue to advance on Damascus.
