Donald Trump, the US president-elect, has hinted that cutting aid to Ukraine could be a possibility. This comes after he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
At the meeting, which was described as “good and productive”, Trump said he wanted an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. However, it’s unclear what will happen next. Trump also refused to say if he had spoken to Russian leader Vladimir Putin since winning the election.
The US president-elect has made previous comments about working to end the conflict in Ukraine. He even advised Putin to avoid escalating the war during a phone call after his election victory. But Russia continued to attack Ukraine, including with drone strikes.
Trump was also asked if he would consider pulling out of NATO. He said that might happen if countries aren’t paying their bills or treating the US fairly. When asked directly about withdrawing from NATO, Trump replied “absolutely”.
When asked if Ukraine should prepare for potential cuts in aid, Trump said “possibly”. This has raised concerns about what will happen to the country‘s efforts to fight off Russian attacks.
