EU Ambassador Condemns Violence in Georgia
The EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, spoke out against the violence that occurred on December 9 in Tbilisi. He condemned the attacks on demonstrators and journalists and stated that the EU is considering consequences for the Georgian authorities.
The Ambassador said that the situation raises questions about Georgia’s privileged relationship with the EU. He noted that although Georgia has had a good relationship with the EU for many years, the current events may change this.
Possible Consequences
Herczyński mentioned that the EU is discussing possible sanctions and the suspension of visa-free travel for certain categories of passports. However, he also pointed out that taking such actions requires unanimity among all 27 EU capitals.
He emphasized that while preparatory work on sanctions has begun, it’s a difficult process in the EU due to its requirement for unanimous agreement.
The Ambassador stressed that the EU wants to support the Georgian people who are advocating for their rights and values. However, he also stated that the authorities responsible for violence and brutality cannot be ignored.
Reforms and Laws
Herczyński noted that Georgia applied to join the EU, which required implementing reforms outlined in 12 and later 9 steps provided by the European Commission. Unfortunately, there were many irregularities in the elections, making it incompatible for a country to join the EU.
He also mentioned the laws adopted in the past year, such as the law on Foreign Agents and anti-LGBTQ+ law, which are not compatible with EU norms and values.
Violence Against Demonstrators
The Ambassador expressed his shock at the violence against demonstrators and journalists. He stated that any media representatives should be allowed to do their job freely.
He also emphasized that cases of brutality against young people, women, and others should be investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice.
Hope for Change
Herczyński’s message to the Georgian people is not to lose hope. He assured them that their voice is being heard and that it’s shocking there has been so much violence and brutality.
