**Syrian Regime Falls, Russia’s Influence in Africa Threatened**
The regime of Bashar al-Assad has fallen in Syria. This is because nearly 800,000 Russian troops are now stationed in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy met with the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kristen Michal, and said that Russia’s military intervention in Syria over the past 10 years had kept Assad’s regime alive. But now, with Russian troops redeployed to Ukraine, Assad’s regime has collapsed.
**Russian Troops in Ukraine**
Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia’s strength is determined by Ukraine’s strength. He warned that if Ukraine falls, Russian President Vladimir Putin will return to Syria and Africa.
Assad fled Damascus on December 8 with his family. Reports also suggest that he has arrived in Moscow seeking asylum.
**Russia’s Naval Base at Risk**
Independent naval analyst H.I. Sutton said that Russia’s ability to maintain its military presence in Africa is now under threat. The fall of Assad’s regime puts at risk Russia’s most important naval base outside its territory, Tartus in Syria.
Tartus hosts a permanent Mediterranean Sea task force and accommodates crucial military assets like warships and submarines.
