EU Ambassador Meets Georgian Minister Amid Election Controversy
The European Union’s ambassador to Georgia met with the country’s foreign minister yesterday. But this meeting has sparked criticism from a Latvian member of the European Parliament.
Rihards Kols said it was “unacceptable” for EU Ambassador Paweł Herczyński to meet with Minister Maka Bochorishvili so soon after condemning the recent stolen elections in Georgia. Kols questioned how many times the EU would give credibility to the Georgian government‘s propaganda.
In his statement, Kols pointed out that it seemed like a contradiction for the ambassador to condemn election theft one day and shake hands with the regime the next. He suggested that this meeting was essentially giving a “lifeline” to the Kremlin-backed Georgian Dream party.
Kols’ comments come amid ongoing tensions over the legitimacy of Georgia’s recent elections.
