**Public Defender Speaks Out Against Police Excess**
The Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, has spoken out against the use of excessive force by special forces during a recent rally. According to Ioseliani, all statements made by his office were addressed to the police officers and special forces, highlighting the facts of beatings and other forms of mistreatment.
**Demand for Immediate Response**
Ioseliani demanded that relevant agencies respond urgently to the incidents that occurred during the actions. He condemned the beating of Guram Rogava and others, and called for immediate action to be taken against those responsible. “The fact of Guram Rogava’s beating and all other facts were assessed by me in the strictest way,” he said.
**Understanding the Complexity of the Situation**
Ioseliani acknowledged that there can always be an aggressive group at a rally that may organize a provocation or become overly excited, which is why the entire rally cannot be threatened with disintegration. However, he emphasized that it was wrong to throw fireworks at police officers and set fire to buildings.
**Investigations into Improper Treatment**
The Public Defender’s Office has launched investigations into reports of improper treatment by law enforcement officers during the arrest and transportation of detainees. According to Ioseliani, 225 persons reported such mistreatment, including beatings in buses and police cruisers.
**Visits to Detainees Under Criminal Law**
Ioseliani also visited those detained under criminal law and is investigating the circumstances of their arrest and detention conditions. He emphasized that several detainees reported being held in unsanitary conditions, which his office has documented and will address with the relevant authorities.
