City Hall Staff in Georgia Face Repression Over EU Petition Support
Employees of the Tbilisi City Hall are being threatened and coerced into withdrawing their signatures from a petition against stopping Georgia’s accession negotiations with the European Union. The petition, which was signed by over 250 people, opposed the decision to halt talks until the end of 2028.
According to Saba Buadze, leader of the “Strong Georgia” coalition, city hall representatives are bargaining with the signatories, asking them to take back their support in exchange for a New Year’s bonus. This is seen as a shameful and criminal act by many.
Buadze expressed his gratitude to those who signed the petition, calling them brave and committed public servants. He also urged senior officials at the City Hall not to participate in the repressions announced by Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
The situation is tense in Tbilisi, with protests and civil resistance against the decision to stop EU talks ongoing. Buadze called on those who are willing to protect freedom and Georgia’s European future to join the cause.
