In a stark assessment, the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, described today as a day when human rights are being trampled underfoot. Despite its reputation as a celebration of human rights, she said this day is also marked by their abuse.
**Rights Violated in Georgia**
According to the President, Georgian citizens face various forms of repression. These include peaceful protests being met with violence and tear gas, the use of chemical substances against demonstrators, and the deployment of special forces without proper identification. Many cases go uninvestigated, and those responsible for these actions often enjoy impunity.
**Law Enforcement Condemned**
The President also condemned violence by law enforcement officers both during and after arrests. The Public Defender has gone so far as to describe this situation as “torture”. This will undoubtedly be a dark stain on Georgia’s history.
