Russian Troops May Be Moved from Syria to Ukraine, But Won’t Change Much
Russia’s military presence in Syria is changing. The country has asked Russian troops to leave their bases there quickly. Some of these troops might be sent to fight in Ukraine. However, experts say this won’t greatly affect the situation on the battlefield.
According to Andrii Kovalenko, a Ukrainian expert, Russia had about 6,000-7,500 military personnel in Syria as of summer 2024. This includes soldiers from private companies that also do military work. If all these troops were sent to fight against Ukraine, it wouldn’t make much difference, Kovalenko said.
The reason is simple: Russia’s army is losing many soldiers every day when trying to attack and take control of areas in Ukraine. So, even if more Russian troops are sent to the front, they will likely be killed or wounded too. Additionally, some of these troops might be sent to Africa instead of Ukraine.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has compared Russia’s regime with the one that was just overthrown in Syria. He said both regimes rely on a network of prisons and torture chambers to maintain control. This includes repression against minority groups, journalists, and activists.
