Hungary Opposes Sanctions Against Georgian Officials
The Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, has spoken out against the inclusion of Georgian officials in a sanctions list. He made his comments at a joint press conference with Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili.
Szijjártó said that Hungary supports Georgia‘s bid to join the European Union. He claimed that Brussels and liberal groups are trying to alienate Georgia, which is a negative approach. The Hungarian minister also criticized a resolution passed by the European Parliament that he described as humiliating towards the Georgian nation.
Szijjártó said that there is a “pro-war and liberal majority” in the European Parliament that attacks people who speak out for peace. He called on Brussels to respect Georgia’s decision to join the EU and not question its sovereign right to decide its own future.
Hungary recently received a proposal from Brussels to impose sanctions against the Georgian Minister of Internal Affairs and high-ranking police officers. Szijjártó described this proposal as outrageous and baseless. He said that Hungary would veto any similar proposals in the future.
