EU Imposes New Sanctions on Russia
The European Union has agreed on a new package of sanctions against Russia. This is the 15th time the EU has taken action against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine.
The new sanctions target Russia’s “shadow fleet”. These are older ships that transport Russian oil and help the country avoid international sanctions. The EU will now restrict these ships from operating.
The sanctions also affect people and organizations in Russia and other countries who help Russia develop its military and technology.
EU leaders have been trying to impose sanctions on Russia for months, but Hungary has blocked some decisions. However, this time the EU was able to agree on a new package of sanctions.
The EU’s President, Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed the agreement. She said that the EU and other countries are committed to putting pressure on Russia.
This is not the first time the EU has taken action against Russia’s gas industry. A previous sanction package passed in June, targeting Russia’s gas industry for the first time.
Other countries like the UK, US, and Switzerland have also imposed similar sanctions on Russia.
