The Enguri hydroelectric plant in occupied Abkhazia has been forced to shut down due to low water levels and insufficient inflows. This critical source of energy for the region has sparked criticism of the local leadership.
**Critics Point to Years of Economic Mismanagement**
Former de-facto officials and analysts are blaming the crisis on years of economic mismanagement. Akhra Aristava, a former head of the Economic Department, argued that the absence of reforms and growing inefficiencies have led to this severe energy supply crisis.
**Short-Sighted Decisions Exacerbated Problems**
Aristava pointed out that decisions like legalizing cryptocurrency mining in 2020 led to a surge in energy consumption. This, combined with a funding gap of up to 1 billion rubles for energy needs alone by 2021, has left the region vulnerable.
**Criticism Directed at Local Government**
Aristava noted that Russia is now demanding payment for electricity, which was predictable given past decisions. He stated that criticism should be directed at the de-facto local government, not the Russian one, as they have failed to carry out necessary reforms and increase the economy.
**Energy Consumption and Vulnerability**
Some in Abkhazia estimate that cryptocurrency mining accounts for 50-60% of the region’s energy consumption. This has left the region increasingly dependent on foreign aid and vulnerable to financial collapse.
