**Increase in Executions of Ukrainian Prisoners by Russian Forces**
The Office of the Prosecutor General has reported a significant rise in executions of prisoners in Ukraine. In just two months, October and November, there were 54 confirmed cases.
**Systemic Violations**
According to Dmytro Lubynets, Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner, these killings are part of a larger pattern of systemic violations by Russian forces. He said that Russian forces have killed at least 109 Ukrainian prisoners of war in 2024 alone.
**Investigations into War Crimes**
Ukraine has launched nearly 170,000 investigations into war crimes and national security violations since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. Despite evidence, the Kremlin denies these allegations.
**Escalation in Executions**
This year’s number of executions is significantly higher than previous years. In total, Ukrainian authorities have documented 177 cases of such executions prior to 2024. The recent increase represents one-third of all documented cases this year.
**Recent Incidents**
On November 24, Russian forces reportedly executed five captured Ukrainian soldiers near Novodarivka in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast. These killings are a gross violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions.
