EU Official Suggests Sanctions for Georgia
The European Union should consider imposing sanctions on people who are suppressing the free and democratic voice of the Georgian people. This was said by Sergey Lagodinsky, a member of the European Parliament from Germany.
Lagodinsky met with the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, to discuss the current situation in the country. He told journalists that the EU should clearly show whose side they are on and support the Georgian people who take to the streets.
He suggested that if necessary, sanctions could be imposed against those who suppress the free and democratic voice of the Georgian people. This would mean that individual countries or the EU as a whole would impose penalties on people who violate human rights.
Lagodinsky mentioned that similar sanctions have been used in other countries where there are human rights violators. He suggested that if the situation in Georgia is similar, then sanctions could be put into effect.
